My first big girl camera!

5.28.2013

My parents love me, and I love photography. That means that I am the proud new owner of a Nikon D5200. Now, I haven't done any serious photography since high school when I had a fully equipped darkroom, wonderful Pentax 35mms, and an unlimited supply of film at my disposal, and a photography teacher who loved me (aka let me use everything as much as I wanted). So bear with me as I search for my groove again, but here are a few first shots.

(Obviously I didn't take the ones with me in them, so I can't take credit there.)

Ignore the super nasty bump on his head. That's what happens when you play with mallets. He's fine now :)

I'm still learning the ins and outs of editing too. Learning real digital photography is like trying to learn a new language after only doing film and darkroom, and point and shoot. But I'm so excited for it :)

New Kid on the Block

5.19.2013

So we finally did it.

We took Emmett for a haircut yesterday. And by we, I mean Chad. Being the big sissy that I am, I made Chad drop me off at Target while he went with Emmett. There's no way I would have held it together while I watched his curls fall to the floor. I know what you're thinking (weeeirdooo) and I don't care.

Before:

And the afters!

Doesn't he look so good?

(his movie-watching face. he doesn't always look so slack-jawed)

It took us two tries to get to the end result. The first cut looked very Julie Andrews and he looked way more like a girl than he did with long hair. BUT as fate would have it, one of my visiting teachees is a high end hairdresser! So we just trotted on over to her house and she fixed Emmett right up. That was really great of her because her baby's barely two weeks old and she's way more exhausted than I am.

So anyway :) He's quite dashing, no? I miss the curls, but I really do love the crew cut. And more importantly, Emmett loves it. Apparently having hair in your face all the time is quite annoying. Who knew?

Have a great Monday!

Life lately

5.14.2013

Prescript: there are no new pictures in this post. I'm very sorry. I'll get on that.

Today probably isn't the best day to write an update post in light of the morning we've had, but I'll give it a shot and try not to color everything else with today's crappy-mood crayon.

THE GOOD
Emmett's still doing well on adjusting to everything. He's so sweet to Troy, and the times when he's not so sweet, he doesn't mean to be. He keeps trying to get Troy to play, and that, in Emmett's book, translates to rough and tumble (like, way). Which also translates to Troy getting knocked around a bit when we're not quick enough to help Emmett be soft. But this morning, Troy was wailing on the couch while I was running around doing I-can't-remember-what in the kitchen, and when I came to pick him up, Emmett had taken his blanket and draped it across Troy and was pulling it up to his armpits and trying to get him comfortable. My heart melted a little lotta bit. Sweet boy :)

Chad started class yesterday! And so far, everything's going really well. The drive to SLC every morning isn't so awesome. He has to leave an hour and a half early to be sure to make class on time. But he has one part-time job for during school so far, and hopefully he'll have another soon.

We got a student apartment! Which is way awesome because it's cheap(er) and all utilities and internet are included at a flat rate. And there are free shuttles to campus and back, and it's only a couple miles from campus anyway. All really, really good things. And we've also got a couple leads for the two-plus-a-little weeks in between moving out of here and moving up there, so hopefully we'll know something soon. (explanation for those not included in my stressed-out phone calls to family: Chad's going to school at the U, we have to be out of our apartment by the 29th, and our SLC apartment isn't available til June 14th. In between, we're not sure where we're going to be, but tons of friends and family have been super helpful in trying to get us a home for two weeks, so thanks everyone!)

Mother's day was great :) Hope y'all had a good one too. Chad gave me Black Heels to Tractor Wheels (one of my all-time favorite love stories) and The Blind Side. Love that movie!

I got to shower this morning before Chad left. In a word: hallelujah.

THE BAD
We're still battling thrush, which came back after we stopped Troy's meds. And it's coming back in me too, which is buckets of fun. This wouldn't be such a big deal save for the fact that we're temporarily without health insurance, and the meds he needs now cost an arm and a leg and a few toes too. So we'll be calling around to see if any other pharmacies have it for less. This is one of those situations where the laugh or cry method doesn't quite fit. All I can muster above a breakdown is a just-keep-swimming kind of attitude.

THE UGLY
Troy threw up down my bra the other day. That was cool. And Emmett was putting little chunks of mozzarella cheese in his ears last night.

Anyway, now I'm mostly procrastinating cleaning my upended house while the boys are sleeping. I'm so emotionally exhausted I'm almost ready to throw everything away instead of having to deal with it. I'm sure Chad would be ok with that, minimalist that he is. Plus then we wouldn't even have to scout out more boxes for the move! Score!

Y'all have a good Tuesday!
PS. Need a happy song? This one's been in my head today: Fine by Me by Andy Grammer on Grooveshark

A few new pictures

5.03.2013

Our little Troy is doing great! He's still kinda skinny but he's getting really long. Anyway, here are a few new pictures from this last week.

And my favorite one from Chad's mom's visit:

He is such a sweetheart. And he sleeps pretty well at night, which is wonderful.

And here're a few new ones of Emmett:

Testing the baby gear:

And my favorite:

Isn't he beautiful? I wish I had that hair.

We're all doing well. Emmett's working on adjusting to the new routine around here, which right now is kind of no routine. It'll be a while before we're all used to things again, but overall, we're doing pretty darn good.

So I realized today that we sort of have Dallas Cowboy babies (Emmett and Troy). Haha! Whoops. Definitely didn't plan that.

Anyway, I'll be back soon with more recent pictures and the story of how it all went down. Have a great weekend!

PS. My little bro gets back from Hungary on Thursday!!!!! Whoop!!!!!!
